Celebrating less label checking work with an AllerMates/Happy Family giveaway!

We’ve talked a lot about labels recently, haven’t we? Well, guess what… I’m going to talk to you about them again today. : ) However, I’m not going to talk about them in terms of a problem, rather more of a solution.

And that solution is the ContentChecked app.

This app hit the Google and Apple stores middle of last year and has quickly become a go-to for parents and others when shopping and cooking for food allergy kids. I, too, recently downloaded it and can certainly see why people love it.

While I’ll admit it’s not a fix (we won’t have that until our food companies are required to clarify their manufacturing processes), it does take some of the guesswork out of reading labels and, more importantly, finding a food that fits the allergen-free bill.

For example, once I downloaded the app, it asked for my basic info and then provided a list of common allergens – a total of 16 to be exact. So I selected four random allergens – eggs, soy, wheat and peanuts – and then hit my pantry. My first target? A bar of Kashi® cereal bars. I clicked the Scan button and held my iPhone over the barcode. The app instantly captured the data and provided a screen of wonderful info, saving me from having to search the back of the box for the product’s list of allergens.

ContentChecked scans your food item and then tells you if it contains any of the allergens you’ve reported.

The bad news? My Kashi bars were not safe for my imaginary wheat allergy, but no fear. I simply clicked the “Alternative” button located beside the Wheat warning sign, and got a list of products that didn’t contain my allergens!

Click Alternative to retrieve a list of foods that DON’T contain the allergen your previous scan did.

Other awesome features of ContentChecked are the ability to save items as favorites, which can essentially act as a grocery shopping list, and to review a product, so that others can hear your experiences (or you can get theirs). It also has a tab for recipes, making the search for allergy-friendly snacks, entrees and desserts so much easier.

Needless to say, I really like this app, and I’m excited to see how it will evolve. So excited in fact, AllerMates has teamed up with Happy Family Brands to do a GIVEAWAY!

That’s right; three random, lucky folks are going to each win an AllerMates lunch bag filled with products from Happy Family. And all you have to do to enter is fill out the short form below!
