Home. Is it the safest place for your food allergic child? Not according to this study.

The moment when you first realize your child has a food allergy… it may have happened at home. After all, you have no idea that you should be shielding your child from a particular food and therefore, don’t have the laser sharp focus on labels that you do now. Makes sense.

But what is the likelihood that it’ll happen a second time AND at home? Apparently very good.

Say what?!

I recently read an article about a team out of Canada that monitored over 1,900 kids – who were already diagnosed with a peanut allergy – for two years each. (You can read the article here.) During that time, they found over 20% of them had a moderate to severe reaction, and some even had multiple reactions. Nothing out of the ordinary… until I read that a whopping 37% of kids suffered that reaction at HOME.

As many of you know, I’m no stranger to severe allergic reactions with my son, Ben, who’s suffered one at home, one at a restaurant and on vacation. So I’m curious to find out… if your child has suffered a reaction AFTER you found out about their allergy, where did it happen? Am I crazy to think this number for reactions at home is high? Let me know by responding to the survey below or telling me in the Comments.
