How far will you go to protect your food allergy kid?
I once had a fellow mom ask whether or not it was safe for her peanut allergic child to go swimming. Now, I gotta be honest, when she asked the question, my mind went blank because I couldn’t even comprehend what she was asking. (In case you, too, are wondering… she was worried about her child being at risk for cross contamination with another child in the pool.) I didn’t understand her concern, well, because my brain just doesn’t work that way.
I mean I’m very conscious of my kids’ activities and worry about their well-being (after all, I did create AllerMates, LOL!), but on a scale of how “anxiety ridden am I as a mom,” I’d say I’m on the low side, while this mom was obviously way on the other side.
Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying her question was wrong. We all have our own levels of comfort. And it makes me curious to find out… How far do you go to protect your child against his or her allergens? Are you on the lower end of the anxiety scale with me, or do you tend to go way above and beyond to keep your kid safe?
Let’s use this as our scale:
a) I’m easy breezy. If something goes wrong, I’m prepared to handle it.
b) I’m balanced. I’ve got one eye on my kid and the other on whatever else.
c) I have my moments. Sometimes I tend to be overly protective, but am pretty easy going for the most part.
d) Oh boy, I’m as tightly wound as it gets. My kid is on a tight leash.
Please tell the community in the Comments below. You never know; you may have a valid concern that other parents haven’t considered. : )
