Kids with Allergies… Prepare for a Safe Landing!
If you’ve ever traveled around a holiday, you know it can be just as busy and chaotic as shopping at a department store two days before Christmas. Oh, the rage! Add kids and allergies in the mix, and reaching your destination may almost seem impossible. Let us help you plan ahead and travel as trouble free as possible with the following advice:
Pack your bag accordingly. Put all of your allergy-fighting supplies in one bag, and keep it with you every step of the way. At a minimum, your arsenal should include a full supply of current medications in pharmacy-labeled containers, a medical action plan, and plenty of safe snacks in case of travel delays or limited selection along the way. A doctor’s note regarding your child’s allergy and the necessity of medical supplies isn’t a bad idea either to avoid any problems with airline personnel or airport security. If you require specific toiletries or an allergen barrier pillow protector, be sure to pack those, too, just to be safe.
Keep it clean. With millions of people on the move this time of year, cross contamination isn’t far fetched. Keep moist towelettes and disposable gloves at hand to wipe down tables and chairs where allergen proteins may exist. It only takes a moment to clean the area you want to use and in doing so, you’ll also help protect your entire family against colds and flu.
Plan your meals. Know ahead of time how you will handle meals, especially if it isn’t feasible to pack your own food for the trip. Search online for restaurants and call ahead to confirm they will be open and can accommodate your allergy.
Alert the masses. Contact your airline, car rental company, hotel, etc., in advance and let them know about your child’s allergies. They may be able to offer special accommodations to make your trip safe and easier (e.g., allergen-free snacks, bedding, etc.). Additionally, it’s always a great idea for your child to wear allergy ID jewelry, like AllerMates wristbands or dog tags, so other travelers or service providers are alert in the event you are separated.
We hope these tips help pave happy trails for you and yours this holiday season. Safe travels!
