Meet Pepe, the autism-support dog. And the reason we may have to get a pet.
I’ve always been amazed at service dogs. They sniff out drugs, they find missing people, they lead the blind! But a dog that protects an autistic girl?! This is a dog after my own kid-safeguarding heart.
Meet Pepe. He’s a chocolate Lab that’s done what many humans are unable to; he’s formed a bond with his 13-year old autistic owner, Maya (who I should mention doesn’t speak due to her severe level of autism). Maya trusts Pepe, and that’s what keeps her from darting off when outdoors with her family. It’s also what gives her parents peace of mind these days.
Pepe, you are amazing. Though you should know I’m cursing you because you’re making me reconsider getting that dog my kids have been begging for. : )
If you have a dog or pet that’s worked wonders for your kid, no matter their ailment, share your experience in the comments below! For the full story on Pepe and Maya, click here.
