Tips for Baby Safety Month by ConsumerSafety.org
At AllerMates, we are dedicated to keeping kiddos safe at all times. Even though we focus on protecting kids with health conditions such as allergies, asthma, and diabetes, we are always looking for general safety tips to pass along to our community of parents, teachers and caretakers. That’s why this month, we partnered with ConsumerSafety.org to bring you baby safety tips in honor of National Baby Safety Month. Keeping our little ones safe isn’t just a priority in September, but it’s a great way to bring awareness to common concerns for all the new parents out there year round.
Here are some simple tips to keep in mind:
- Irons aren’t just dangerous when they’re hot. Dangling cords can attract curious babies that love to pull on everything from handles to hair, and that can lead to head injuries.
- Dishwashers are at ground level, and give crawling babies access to hazardous soaps, as well as knives and other sharp objects. Install a locking strap, and monitor little ones when you are emptying and refilling the dishwasher.
- Changing tables are equipped with buckles for a good reason. Even if your baby hasn’t rolled over yet, don’t take any chances. Buckling up isn’t just for cars—it’s essential to always buckle a little on into their high chair and changing table.
- Pet Food is another danger at ground level. Small kibbles can pose a serious choking hazard for babies. Water dishes can also pose a drowning danger to babies that lack the arm strength to push their head up if they fall in—babies can drown in as little as an inch of water. Always pick up pet food and water, or keep it in a gated area away from baby’s reach.
- Pest poisons and traps may help you keep critters out of your house, but they are a serious hazard for babies. Keep these items off of the floor so babies don’t come into contact with them.
- Recalls are most common for children’s products, because there are much more stringent safety regulations imposed on them. Many parents purchase their baby furniture and equipment long before the little ones arrive (or are given items as hand-me-downs). Always double check for recalled products before using them—especially if you’ve received hand-me-downs or purchased from garage sales.
We discovered these recently recalled items at ConsumerSafety.org that should be returned or discarded:
We hope we inspired you to keep your little ones safe and sound!
